How to Replace an audi new key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are different pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially when they're an Bosch model like ours. 5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi car key because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine is spinning.
