They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an alternative producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto reunited for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in 31 years that all of Toto's original members were on stage together. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
