How to Replace an audi key blade G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor replacement Audi car key (G28). The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. The good news is that they are quite affordable and readily available, especially when you're looking at an Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. 5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your vehicle.
