Pragmatics and Semantics

A lot of contemporary philosophical theories focus on semantics. Brandom for instance is a focus on the meaning of words (albeit from a pragmatic viewpoint).

The pragmatic maxim is at the core of classical pragmatics. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses through their 'practical implications' or their implications for the experience of specific situations. This leads to an epistemological view that is a form of 'inquiry based epistemology,' and an anti Cartesian explanation of the norms governing inquiry. The early pragmatists generally disagreed on the issue of whether pragmatism can think of itself as a scientific philosophy that adopts a monism about truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).

Others, such as Peirce or James, are skeptical of the correspondence theory, which states that the true beliefs are those that accurately represent reality.

Pragmatism also examines the connection between beliefs, reality and human rationality. It is a rapidly growing area of inquiry, with numerous schools of thought developing and incorporating pragmatism's principles into their own philosophical framework.
